Static, Dynamic and Compound. If you have used Marketing Lists then you will be familiar with how Static and Dynamic lists work and a Segment is no different. We will begin by looking at Dynamic Segments. If you are familiar with the Advanced Find functionality within Dynamics then you will find a lot of similarities between these two features. Dynamic Segments allow you to set conditions, which result in the members of your segment continually changing.

By default your Segment will start with contacts but you can select any Profile you wish by closing the contact condition, using either X.

From here you are able to select your preferred profile.

When you have selected your Profile you can add your conditions using the designer.

For this example I’m going to create a Segment consisting of any contacts that have their City set to Manchester OR Liverpool. To do this I would select the Address 1: City field and set to is Manchester & Liverpool. You will notice in the bottom right there is an Est. size:, which will do a calculation on the fly to let you know how many contacts meet your conditions.

The flow tab lets you visualise your conditions, although it is only really useful when you start using groups.

The query tab give you a formula based view of your conditions

Once you are happy with your Dynamic Segment you can navigate to the general tab and enter some details about your Segment.

After that you can make your segment live using the Go Live button at the top. This will also check for errors and let you know if there is anything wrong with your segment.

The next type of segment is Static. Static segments are manually changed rather than automatically, like Dynamic segments. They are much simpler to set up as you only need to worry about the General tab. Once you have filled in your details you can start adding your Contacts. The first thing you will notice is the List Members. This allows you to manage your members directly from the segment by selecting from a list of all the contacts in your system.

You can also manage your segment members via standard views. By selecting contacts you are able to add or remove from a static segment of your choice.

The final type of segment is Compound. Compound segments allow you to use existing segments to create a new one. This is done by using Union Exclude or Merge.

Union allows you to merge 2 segments together. Below I have added a Static segment to my Dynamic segment. The flow is letting me know that there are 3 people in my Static segment but 2 already exists in the Dynamics segment, which is why the total increases by 1, taking my total to 23 from 22.

Exclude allows me to remove contacts from my segments, if they exist in both. 1 person exists in both segments so they have been removed.

Intersect allows you to create a new segment from users who fall into both selected segments. Below I have 1 contact in both segments.

As always Microsoft have a more in depth post about segments, which can be accessed here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-au/dynamics365/marketing/segmentation-lists-subscriptions

We also have a blog post on Advanced Find, which you may find useful: https://www.crmcs.co.uk/content/how-to-use-the-advanced-find-in-dynamics.aspx

Segments within Dynamics 365 for Marketing are a great way of breaking down your database down into more focused groups.
