Authenticated Domains appear as Blank for Dynamics 365 Marketing

Why is the Authenticated Domains area of Dynamics 365 Marketing appearing as blank in the Marketing App Settings?

This is because the current User does not have Read Access to the Authenticated Domain (‘msdyncrm_setupdomain’) Entity within the Dynamics, and so cannot read the list of Authenticated Domain Records via the Common Data Service.

This presents as a blank area in Settings and so can confusing initially.

It’s blank Jim!

The Marketing Manager – Business Security Role should have Read and Update Access to this Entity in CRM, as we would typically use a User with this Security Role to configure our use of Dynamics 365 for Marketing; however this Role does not give access here and so will not be able to setup the Domains.

To access and work with the Authenticated Domains area of the Settings, you must have the ‘System Administrator’ Role or have a Custom Role created to give the relevant Entity Permissions; as none of the default Marketing Security Roles grant access over this more Administrator area of the initial Marketing App Settings.

What to do?

Giving out the System Administrator Role is not ideal and may create problems for Security Compliance.

The best practise way to solve this problem is to create a New Security Role that acts as a Marketing App Administrator and only gives the rights needed to configure the Authenticated Domains and other initial configuration areas of the App.

In a Blue Peter style, we do have ‘one we made earlier’ as a Managed Solution you can import into Dynamics 365 for Marketing as way of creating a new Marketing Administrator Role that will let us configure a User to configure the Settings of the Marketing App without having full-on System Administrator permissions within Dynamics 365.
