This article was inspired by Future Lawyer Week 4.0, our first legal conference in London since 2019. Whilst at the event we had the opportunity to present a LIVE product demo of our in-house built app DocDrive365. Due to Covid, we wanted to make sure that our product demo was available to everyone even if they couldn’t make it to the event, didn’t fancy attending a live event, or had to social distance – so we turned to Linked-In LIVE.

This article will walk you through ‘HOW TO: Prepare to go LIVE on Linked-In!’ With it being a relatively new feature, there were a few things that needed careful consideration/prep beforehand and some processes that we didn’t realise would be so time-consuming.

Q: Are you going LIVE on Linked In for the first time?

  • You need to make sure you’re pre-approved by Linked-In to GO LIVE, they’ve put in place a list of criteria which can be found HERE >>  https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/100224/linkedin-live-video?lang=en
  • Unfortunately, like Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms you can’t LIVE stream directly from the Linked-In platform yet. Therefore, you have a pick from a few third-party apps that link with Linked-In before you go live.

Q: Which third-party streaming software should you use?

We ended up choosing Switcher Studio after having a few difficulties or pricing issues with the other products, this was easy to use via the iPhone 11 (be aware if you’re using an older iPhone this may not work) and live stream directly through this device whilst being able to monitor the LIVE Test or LIVE Stream through my desktop.

  • Vimeo – Pricey and tied into a monthly subscription
  • Re- stream – The microphone didn’t work with the video on the I-phone, there was no app available to stream from and the website access via I-Phone was poor.
  • Switcher Studio – We chose this as it was a free trial for 14 days, offers a 20-day pass at a reasonable rate.

Q: What else do you need to consider before going live on Linked-In?
  • Create a Linked-In Event on your personal/company page to make sure your audience are invited to your Live Stream, and they know your agenda.
  • Provide a QR Code for attendees to scan at the end of the presentation with your details or provide handouts so people have your contact details.
  • What microphone should you use for live streaming so your audience can clearly hear the presenter? MOVO Edge Microphone.
  • You will need to live stream from your mobile through the Switcher Studio App for this to be able to Live Stream.
  • Buy a I-Phone tripod to ensure you’re not having to hold the I-Phone in place (choosing a tripod with a spirit level was helpful)
  • Always complete a TEST run! (Maybe twice)

Q: Today is the day! What do I need to prepare?
  • Make sure you know where you are presenting and get setup early
  • Take LOTS of HDMI cables
  • Set up a Tripod which is stable for your Go-Live
  • Make sure you do a test run to test the microphone and the live stream function
  • Tip: Your live stream video will run around 30 seconds behind so if it doesn’t show up straight away – don’t panic!

Now your live stream is done. How to access your LIVE stream download

You will be able to access your LIVE stream recording via the physical device that you filmed on. For us, we recorded on an iPhone 11 and had to access the recording via the cloud rather than Linked-In or Switcher Studio (the third-party App we used to LIVE stream through Linked-In)

We know this isn’t our usual technical article, but we thought over the next few months online events might make a comeback. We hope you found this article useful and for anyone who is thinking of going LIVE on Linked In just follow these steps and you’ll do great! Of course, if you’re struggling just email contact@crmcs.co.uk and we’ll give you a hand.
